With the world’s population growing and demand for goods steadily rising, both production and consumption continue to increase. As a result, enormous amounts of waste are generated, creating a “waste crisis” in many countries.

Every product we purchase eventually becomes waste, and increased production requires ever more natural resources, which are limited on Earth.

Currently, approximately 8 billion people live in the world, generating around 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually. The rate of waste generation varies from country to country and depends on multiple factors.

The United States is the world’s largest per-capita waste generator. Each American produces an average of 951 kilograms of waste per year, which is almost three times more than the amount generated by an average Japanese citizen.

This makes it critically important that waste management measures are implemented in a systematic, purposeful, and effective way to minimize environmental impact and conserve resources.

Test your knowledge and learn more about waste.
